The Gugulethu community champions ended off the year with a big splash at the Muizenberg slides.

On the 22nd of December 2022, 21 champions and Pristine staff members embarked on an outing to Muizenberg for some summertime fun, as their reward for the stellar work they have done with clean-ups in and around Gugulethu. This was a first-time experience for many of the youth, seeing some take to the water slide immediately, while others needed some cheering on to help shake away the nerves.

Each year the youth are given a choice of where they would like to spend their reward and the Muizenberg slides were given a resounding “YES” from all. Many youths from disadvantaged backgrounds rarely have the opportunity to frequent beaches and waterparks. At Pristine Earth Collective, we have a strong mandate for keeping our oceans and waterways clean and accessible, to be enjoyed by all.

After a great deal of sliding, a wonderful lunch was had by all. The old cautionary tale of waiting for your food to settle before getting back into the water, did little to stop the youth from capitalising on their slide time and the youth were back in the water within minutes.

The younger individuals who were less excited about the slides happily splashed around in the baby pool and were given a quick lesson on kicking and dunking their heads underwater.

In keeping with the theme of leaving your space litter-free, the champions dutifully cleaned up after themselves and made sure to leave nothing but wet footprints behind.

In hosting outings of this kind, we at Pristine Earth Collective hope to continue encouraging our future environmentalists and conservationists to always leave their space cleaner and greener.

Special thanks to all those who assisted with the outing, and to Pamela Silwana, George van der Schyff, and Gcobisa Maleki for organising parental consent and transport for the outing and providing photographs.
